Common questions
What is a wake window?
A wake window is how long a baby is awake between one sleep and the next. It is the single most useful number for planning a day, because it tells you roughly when the next nap is due from when your baby last woke up.
How do wake windows change with age?
They get longer. A common starting point is about 55 min for a newborn, growing to about 4 hr 30 min by the first birthday, while the number of naps drops from five to two.
Should I follow these numbers exactly?
No. They are typical starting points, and plenty of healthy babies sit on either side of them. Start here, watch how your baby actually does, and adjust. If you are worried about sleep or feeding, ask your pediatrician.
Every baby is different, and these numbers are a place to start, not a rule. If you are worried about how your baby is eating, sleeping or growing, call your pediatrician.
Let the numbers run the day for you
Bobbychips starts from these same numbers, then projects your day from what you actually log: the next nap from the last wake-up, the remaining bottles spread across the rest of the day, bedtime held where you put it. Every number is yours to change.
