What the day looks like

With a wake window of 1 hr 10 min, a baby who wakes up at 7:00 am is usually ready for the first nap around 8:10 am. From there the pattern repeats: awake for about 1 hr 10 min, then a nap of about 1 hr, four times across the day, with bedtime around 8:00 pm.

Real days rarely run to the minute. A short nap brings the next one earlier, a long one pushes it later, and the last nap of the day is the one that most often gets squeezed by bedtime. The wake window is the part to hold on to, because it tells you when the next nap is due no matter how the last one went.

Feeding

About 24 oz of breast milk or formula a day, split across eight feeds, works out to 3 oz a bottle. Solids have not started yet at this age, so all of this comes from breast milk or formula.

Babies vary a lot here, and a day that runs over or under is normal. What matters more is the trend across several days, along with wet diapers: at least six a day is a common guide.

Common questions

How long should a 1 month old be awake between naps?

A common starting point for 1 month is a wake window of about 1 hr 10 min. Count it from the moment your baby wakes up, and watch for sleepy cues, since a baby who is overtired can be harder to settle.

How many naps does a 1 month old take?

About four naps of roughly 1 hr each, which adds up to about 4 hr of daytime sleep.

How much should a 1 month old eat?

A typical starting target is about 24 oz a day across eight feeds, or 3 oz a bottle. If you nurse, count feeds rather than ounces. Your pediatrician can tell you what is right for your baby's weight.

What time should a 1 month old go to bed?

Around 8:00 pm, with about 9.5 hours of overnight sleep. Night wakings to feed are expected at this age.

Every baby is different, and these numbers are a place to start, not a rule. If you are worried about how your baby is eating, sleeping or wetting, call your pediatrician.

Let the numbers run the day for you

Bobbychips starts from these same numbers, then projects your day from what you actually log: the next nap from the last wake-up, the remaining bottles spread across the rest of the day, bedtime held where you put it. Every number is yours to change.
